If you're building a home bar or just trying to figure out your go-to drink, understanding the base spirits helps. Each has a personality, and one of them is probably yours.
Vodka is designed to be clean and neutral. It takes on the flavour of whatever you mix it with, which makes it the most versatile spirit. If you like: caesars, screwdrivers, vodka soda, or any mixed drink where the spirit doesn't dominate — vodka is your base. Good picks in Calgary: Smirnoff, Tito's, or Absolut.
Gin is essentially vodka with botanicals (juniper, herbs, spices) added. It has actual flavour on its own, which means it either appeals to you or it doesn't. If you like: gin and tonic, martinis, or herbal/citrus flavours — gin is your base. Good picks: Tanqueray, Hendrick's, or Beefeater.
Rum comes from sugar cane and carries inherent sweetness. White rum is lighter; dark rum is richer with caramel and molasses notes. If you like: mojitos, piña coladas, rum and coke, or sweeter cocktails — rum is your base. Good picks: Captain Morgan White, Bacardi, Appleton Estate.
Tequila is made from agave and has a distinctive earthy, slightly sweet character. If you like: margaritas, tequila soda, palomas, or shots (no judgment) — tequila is your base. Good picks: Hornitos, 1800 Silver, or Patron for a treat.
We have to include this because it's Calgary. Rye whisky is smooth, slightly spicy, and mixes beautifully with ginger ale. If you like: rye and ginger, Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, or sipping whisky — rye is your base. Good picks: Crown Royal, Forty Creek, Alberta Premium.
