Most people's relationship with tequila starts and ends with shots and salt. That's like judging all music by what plays at a hockey arena. Good tequila is a sipping spirit with complexity that rivals whisky — you just haven't tried the right one yet.
Blanco (Silver): Unaged or briefly aged. Clean agave flavour, best for cocktails (margaritas, palomas). Bright and slightly peppery.
Reposado: Aged 2–12 months in oak barrels. Smoother, with hints of vanilla and caramel. Great for sipping or elevated cocktails.
Añejo: Aged 1–3 years. Rich, complex, almost whisky-like. Best sipped neat or on the rocks.
Hornitos Plata is the best budget blanco — clean and honest. 1800 Reposado is the sweet spot for quality and price. For a treat, Don Julio Reposado or Patron Añejo won't disappoint.
2 oz blanco tequila, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 0.75 oz triple sec (Cointreau is better), salt on half the rim. Shake with ice, strain over fresh ice. That's it — forget the neon green premixes forever.
