All three are whisky, but they come from different places, use different grains, and taste different. Here's the practical breakdown.
From Scotland. Made primarily from malted barley. Often smoky or peaty (not always). Aged minimum 3 years in oak barrels. Tends to be complex, sometimes challenging for newcomers. Popular brands: Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Johnnie Walker, Macallan.
From the USA (mostly Kentucky). Made from at least 51% corn. Sweet, smooth, with vanilla and caramel notes. Aged in new charred oak barrels. Approachable for beginners. Popular brands: Jack Daniel's, Maker's Mark, Bulleit, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey.
Canadian rye is made from various grains and is smooth and versatile — the backbone of Canadian cocktail culture. American rye is made from at least 51% rye grain and is spicier. Canadian brands: Crown Royal, Forty Creek, Alberta Premium, Wiser's. American brands: Bulleit Rye, Rittenhouse.
Bourbon if you like sweet and smooth. Canadian rye if you want something versatile for mixing. Scotch if you're adventurous and want complexity.
