Rum has the widest flavour range of any spirit — from light and clean to rich and complex. Here's your crash course.
Clear, clean, and light. The base for mojitos, daiquiris, and piña coladas. Bacardi Superior and Havana Club White are the standards. Best for mixing — not much to sip on its own.
Aged in barrels, giving it colour and depth. Caramel, molasses, vanilla, and spice notes. Appleton Estate and El Dorado are excellent sipping rums. Great in rum and coke, dark 'n stormy (with ginger beer), or neat.
Flavoured with spices — typically vanilla, cinnamon, and clove. Captain Morgan Original is the iconic spiced rum. Great with cola, ginger ale, or apple cider in fall.
Mojito: White rum, lime, mint, sugar, soda water. Refreshing summer classic.
Rum & Coke: Dark or spiced rum with cola. The default. Never fails.
Daiquiri: White rum, lime juice, simple syrup. Shaken and strained. Not the frozen blender version — the real one is better.
