Those neon-green bottled margarita mixes are the reason people think they don't like margaritas. A real margarita is three ingredients, takes 30 seconds, and is one of the best cocktails in existence.
2 oz blanco tequila, 1 oz fresh lime juice (fresh — not bottled), 0.75 oz Cointreau (or triple sec if you're on a budget). That's it.
Salt half the rim of a rocks glass (run a lime wedge around the rim, dip in coarse salt). Combine tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau in a shaker with ice. Shake hard for 10 seconds. Strain into the glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a lime wheel.
Spicy: Muddle 2–3 slices of jalapeño in the shaker before adding other ingredients.
Frozen: Blend everything with 1 cup of ice instead of shaking. Add 0.5 oz simple syrup for the frozen version.
Skinny: Skip the Cointreau, use 0.5 oz agave nectar instead. Less sweet, fewer calories.
Using sour mix instead of fresh lime. Using cheap tequila (you can taste it). Using too much sweetener. Forgetting to salt the rim. Using pre-made frozen mixes from a box.
