Gin and Tonic: How to Make the Perfect G&T at Home

The World's Simplest Great Drink

A gin and tonic has three ingredients: gin, tonic water, and a garnish. The simplicity is what makes it perfect — and what makes a bad one inexcusable. Here's how to make it right.

The Gin

Tanqueray for a bold, juniper-forward G&T. Hendrick's for something lighter with cucumber notes. Beefeater for the classic London dry style. Any of these work beautifully.

The Tonic

This matters more than most people think. Use a good tonic — Fever-Tree, Q Tonic, or Canada Dry Premium. Cheap tonic tastes like flat sugar water and ruins good gin.

The Ratio

1 part gin to 2 parts tonic for a standard drink. 1:1 if you like it strong. 1:3 if you want something lighter for a hot day. Adjust to taste — there's no wrong ratio if you enjoy it.

The Build

Fill a tall glass with ice (lots of ice — it keeps the drink cold longer and actually dilutes less). Pour gin over the ice. Pour tonic slowly down the side of the glass (don't dump it — you'll lose carbonation). Gently stir once. Garnish with a lime wedge (classic), cucumber slice (for Hendrick's), or grapefruit peel (for something different).
