Most wine sold in Calgary liquor stores is meant to be consumed within a year or two. You don't need special storage for these — just a few basic rules.
Keep wine cool and consistent. Ideal is 12–15°C, but anywhere between 10–20°C works for short-term storage. The enemy is heat — never store wine near a stove, above the fridge, or in direct sunlight. A dark closet in a cool part of your home works perfectly.
Store bottles with corks on their side to keep the cork moist. Screw-cap wines can stand upright. Most wines sold in Calgary now use screw caps, so this is less of a concern than it used to be.
UV light degrades wine. Keep it out of direct sunlight. A closed cabinet or pantry is fine.
An opened bottle of wine lasts 3–5 days in the fridge with the cork or cap back on. Red wine included — cold slows oxidation. Take it out 15 minutes before drinking to take the chill off. Sparkling wine loses fizz within 1–2 days even with a stopper.
Cool, dark, on its side if corked, drink within a year. That's it. For the everyday wines most of us drink, this is all you need to know. Need a fresh bottle? Call (825) 450-3030.
