A home wine tasting is one of the easiest and most impressive things you can host. No special equipment, no formal training — just good wine, some snacks, and friends who are curious.
4–6 wines is the sweet spot for a tasting. Fewer feels too short; more and your palate (and your guests) loses focus. Plan one bottle per 4–5 tasting pours.
A theme gives the tasting structure. Ideas: all red wines under $20, wines from one country (try all-Italian or all-Argentinian), the same grape from different regions (Cabernet from California vs Chile vs Australia), red vs white head-to-head, or local Alberta wines.
Clear wine glasses (one per person is fine — you rinse between wines). Water glasses for cleansing the palate. Crackers and bread for neutralizing between wines. A simple scorecard with the wine names where people can write notes and rate them.
Keep it simple: cheese board (variety of hard and soft), crackers, cured meats, olives, grapes, and dark chocolate. These complement wine without overpowering it.
Go light to heavy: sparkling first, then whites, then rosé, then light reds, then heavy reds. This keeps your palate from being overwhelmed early.
