Whisky cocktails are some of the easiest and most satisfying drinks to make at home. Most require 2–3 ingredients and no special equipment. Here are five classics that work every time.
Calgary's unofficial drink. 1.5 oz Canadian rye (Crown Royal, Forty Creek, Alberta Premium), fill with ginger ale, squeeze of lime. Done. Adjust the ratio to taste. This is what you'll be making most often.
2 oz bourbon or rye, 1 sugar cube (or 0.5 oz simple syrup), 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters, orange peel. Muddle the sugar and bitters, add whisky and a large ice cube, stir, garnish with the orange peel. Looks impressive, takes 60 seconds.
2 oz whisky (bourbon or rye), 1 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.75 oz simple syrup. Shake with ice, strain into a glass. Optional: add an egg white and dry-shake first for a silky texture.
2 oz rye whisky, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Stir with ice, strain into a chilled glass, garnish with a cherry. Elegant and strong.
Hot coffee, 1.5 oz Irish whiskey (Jameson), 1 tbsp brown sugar, whipped cream floated on top. Perfect for Calgary's long winters.
