A Calgary summer BBQ needs three things: good meat, good weather, and good beer. You can't control the weather (this is Calgary, after all), but you can nail the beer selection. Here's what works.
Start with the classics: Canadian, Coors Light, or Bud Light. They're light, they're cold, everyone knows what they're getting, and they disappear fast in the sun. Buy more than you think you'll need — a 24-pack per 6–8 guests is a safe starting point for a 4-hour BBQ.
Mix in some Alberta craft to give your guests options. Wild Rose Wraspberry Ale is a summer staple. Big Rock Grasshopper is a solid wheat ale. Toolshed Red Rage has enough flavour to stand up to burgers. A mixed 12-pack of craft alongside the domestic gives everyone something to reach for.
Corona with lime is the universal BBQ beer. Throw in some Modelo Especial and Dos Equis for variety. Stella Artois for the guests who want something a step up. Keep them in a cooler full of ice — presentation matters.
Hard seltzers (White Claw, Nutrl) for the non-beer crowd. They're the fastest-growing category at Calgary BBQs and you'll be glad you have them. Non-alcoholic beer for the designated drivers. Ice — more than you think. And a call to (825) 450-3030 when you inevitably run low mid-party.
