Beer Sizes Explained: Tallboys, Sleeves, Pints, and Flats

Why So Many Sizes?

Walk into a Calgary liquor store and you'll see beer in a dozen different formats. Here's what each one actually is.

Cans

Standard can: 355ml (12 oz). The default. Sold in 6, 12, 15, 24, and 28 packs.

Tallboy: 473ml (16 oz). Popular for craft beer and seltzers. Often sold individually or in 4-packs.

Tall can (King can): 500ml or 568ml. Common format for Canadian domestics. 8 and 15 packs are standard.

Bottles

Standard bottle: 341ml. The classic stubby or long-neck. Sold in 6, 12, and 24 packs.

Bomber: 650ml. Common for craft beer. Usually sold individually.

Growler: 1.89L (half gallon). Filled at breweries and taprooms. Drink within 2–3 days of opening.

Multi-Packs

6-pack: The casual weeknight or social contribution amount.

12-pack: Enough for a small gathering or a weekend.

15-pack: Budweiser and Coors Light's sweet spot format.

24-pack (case): The party standard.

Flat (24 loose): Same as a case but without the box. Usually slightly cheaper.
